Dan Foreman is the sales manager for a popular sports magazine, whose life is turned upside down when a large media company purchases the mag. Dan soon finds that a much younger man, Carter Duryea, is made his boss. Matters get complicated when Carter and Dan's college age daughter Alex form a relationship.

Topher Grace auditioned and got the part. Grace had auditioned four times for the role, and had to convince producer Paul Weitz that he was right for the role, by highlighting his raising by his father, a businessman with sharp negotiation skills.
