Mark Teixeira Biography

Mark was the fifth overall pick in the June 2001 draft by the Rangers and has shown why he went so high in the draft. Despite suffering a ruptured tendon in his left elbow attempting to make a catch in foul territory at the start of the 2002 season for Class A Charlotte, Mark came back to hit .320 with nine home runs and 41 RBI in 38 games. That earned him a promotion to Class AA Tulsa. In 48 games there, Mark hit .316 with 10 home runs and 28 RBI. Mark can play both third base and first base, but it is what he can do with the bat that will have him in the lineup.

While at Georgia Tech, Mark hit .409 with 36 home runs and 165 RBI in 140 games over three seasons for the Yellow Jackets. In 2000, Mark won the Dick Howser Trophy as the National Collegiate Player of the Year after hitting .427 with 18 home runs and 80 RBI in 66 games. That season he was also selected the nation's top player by Baseball America and The Sporting News.

In the summer of 2000, Mark played with Team USA, helping the American squad win the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Mark led Team USA in batting (.385), runs scored (26), hits (46), RBI (23) and total bases (70).
